India celebrates National Sports Day on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The day is also dedicated to the nations’ sports heroes and champions, honoring their contribution and dedication towards bringing laurels to the country. With the aim to raise awareness about the values of sports: discipline, perseverance, sportsman spirit, teamwork, and to encourage public in large to take up sports and make it an integral part of their lives while emphasizing on the importance of being fit and healthy.
This year the ‘Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports’ (MYAS) and ‘Fit India Mission’ aim to take FIT India movement to Schools/Colleges/Ministries/Govt & Pvt Organisations by encouraging them to participate in a grand manner on the occasion of National Sports Day on 29th August. On this day, Schools/Colleges/Ministries/Govt & Pvt Organisations should encourage their students/employees/staff to take part in sports/fitness activities for at least 1 hour.
Sikkim as a state celebrated National Sports Day in vigour, with different programmes held in all the districts of the state.
Gangtok:
The Capital of Sikkim celebrated National Sports Day 2022 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand at White Hall Complex. The programme was organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Fit India.
The event had the presence of M.N Subba, Advisor, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim as the chief guest. Also present were Karma R Bonpo, Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs, Doma Tshering Bhutia, Director Sports and Youth Affairs, students, participants, officers and staff of the Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim.
The event began with the honouring of Major Dhyan Chand with khadas on his portrait followed by the lightning of lamps by the dignitaries.Reminiscing the glorious and unparalleled achievements of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand Jigme Y Lepcha, Deputy Director, Coaching, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim made his welcome address.
The main event of the function was the “Chief Minister One Mile Run 2022”, flagged off by the chief guest MN Subba. A total of 259 aspirant athletes from eight different schools, sports clubs and many other athletes from in and around Gangtok participated in the run. The run was categorised under 15 boys and girls, open men’s and women’s run.
Addressing the gathering MN Subba, Advisor Sports and Youth Affairs Department, said that National Sports Day promotes the significance of sports in our daily life, helping us to grow better both physically and mentally.He stated that the day is to raise awareness about the values of sports, discipline, perseverance, sportsman spirit, and teamwork, and to encourage the public at large to take up sports and make it an integral part of their lives while emphasizing the importance of being fit and healthy. He congratulated all the participants for their participance in the National Sports Day event and wished all those athletes who have a high spirit in achieving their goals.
Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Karma R Bonpo in his short address welcomed all the participants. He said that the nation celebrates this day to honour our hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. He stated that the youths have a very major role in India, leading the Country in the next 25years as India will be reaching its 100 years of Independence. He highlighted that athletes have many opportunities as sports have become a very lucrative career for youths in the present time. He also said that the department has a vision and policy to bring forward athletes to encourage them further in the various sports competition in the Country as well as abroad, helping them to bring laurels to the State.
He further wished all the participants, urged them to achieve their goals with their hard work, dedication discipline and said that the State looks forward to seeing the youth get recognition nationwide. The event also featured a Zumba demonstration by the students of West Point Senior Secondary School and Modern Senior Secondary School.Thereafter, there was a Wusu demonstration by the State Coach Wusu Aron Gurung and his team.
The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim conferred letter of appreciation to three coaches on the occasion for their remarkable contribution in the field of coaching.Among them was Puspa Chettri(Gurung) former International footballer of Sikkim who represented India in the Suharta Cup women’s football Tournament held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1986.
Alpan Lepcha, Physical Education Teacher (PET) of Government Sr. Sec. School, Chujachen produced and developed many football talents from the grass root level. He represented the State as a coach of the women’s team of 1st North East Women’s Football Tournament held at Imphal Manipur and secured 2nd position.
Mukesh Rai is a prominent boxer and a NIS boxing coach in the State and has produced many State and National Boxers. He is an IBA Star 2 Boxing Coach of India.
Pritam Shilal is a prominent boxing coach of the State who has produced many National level boxers. He is a 3 Star BFI referee and a judge at the National level. Under his coaching, Miss Prava Gajmir secured a bronze medal in the Youth National Championship 2022, held in Tamil Nadu.
Later, the chief guest of the day inaugurated the Artificial Climbing Wall of Sikkim Sports Climbing Association at White hall premises which also included conferring a letter of appreciations to the two mountaineers for their remarkable contribution to promoting sport climbing in the state.
Bhaichung Yunzon is a prominent Mountaineering Instructor and a tour Guide of the state whose contributions to his profession are remarkable. Under his guidance sport climbing students took part in many competitions like North East zonal and National competitions.
Bikash Rawat who is a prominent Sport Climbing coach of the state. Under his guidance Sikkim Sport, Climbing teams bagged 10 medals in the recently concluded IMF, North East Zonal Competition held at Guwahati in June 2022.The event also had table tennis demonstrations and boxing demonstration bouts of different weight categories. Earlier in the event, the winners of the Chief Minster One Mile Run were presented with a cash prize and a certificate.

Soreng
The 11th National Sports Day under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was celebrated on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand at Soreng Senior Secondary School playground.
The event was graced by the chief guest Amber Gurung (President Soreng Badminton Association), and accompanied by Principal Soreng Senior Secondary School Dr. P.B. Chettri, Deputy Director Fisheries Lobzang Tamang, General Secretary Boxing Association West District Paro hang Subba, President Sporting club of Soreng District Abishek Chettri, Deputy Director Sports and Youth Affairs Dilip Chettri, AD Sports and Youth Affairs Soreng Mamita Gurung, Government Officials of line departments and the representatives from various schools.
Deputy Director SYA briefed about the celebration of National Sports Day and the life history of Major Dhyan Chand and his achievements of Olympic games.The event was organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Soreng at BAC level under Soreng GPU.
The event consisted of various sporting events such as Chief Minister’s One Mile Run, Open Men’s Relay race, Girls Exibition Football match, Yoga and Zumba presentation by the invitees Schools.The All Chief Minister Football tournament of Block level Under Soreng District kicked off for the S- League of 3 Division.
The match was played between Future Star Sporting Club Baigunay and Sporting Club Chumbong- Chakung. The winner of this tournament will represent District for the State Level. The winners were distributed with prizes and certificates.
Mangan
The National Sports Day under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Fit India was celebrated at Mangan District. The National Sports Day was organised by Department of Sports and Youth Affairs Mangan, which had various events at different locations.
The events had the presence of Chariman Sikkim Welfare Commission, Nim Tshering Lepcha, ADC(Dev) Mangan, Kashi Raj Limboo, Dy. Director Sport & Youth Affairs, Janim Lepcha, JD Education, Sajan Sebastian, Principals, Teachers, Coaches, Sports Persons, Students, Staffs from Sports & Youth Affairs Department and local Gentry.
The day started with the Chief Minister’s One Mile Run, 2022 from the District Administrative Center. Different schools from in and around Mangan town participated in the run. Afterwards, Yoga and Zumba session were conducted at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School Mangan. Thereafter, an exciting sporting event of Kho-Kho match and Tug of War was held at the playground of Government Senior Secondary School Mangan.Later, at Naga ground, the 1st All Sikkim Chief’s Minister Football Championship 2022 C- Division was kicked off on the occasion of National Sports Day.
The first match in the Championship was played between Northerners F.C vs Chungthang Sporting Club, the match ended with the score of 3-1. The winners in different sporting events were awarded with prizes and certificates.
Pakyong
“District Sports and Youth Affairs Department”, Pakyong observed “National Sports Day” at different BACs, under Pakyong District on 29 August 2022. National Sports Day is observed every year to commemorate the birthday of Indian Hockey legend “Major Dhyan Chand” , widely known as “Hockey Wizard” and “the Magician”.
To celebrate the day, various activities like Chief Minister One Mile Run among feeder schools, exhibition matches, Zumba, Yoga, Quiz Competition on Sports and exhibition of Sports equipment etc.Students were apprised about the importance of the day and were elucidated about the life of “Major Dhyan Chand”.
NSS
In line with the celebration of National Sports Day, NSS volunteers fron various NE States exhibited indigenous games of their respective ethnic groups such as the indigenous grappling sport of Naga Wrestling and a rendition of Cock Fighting game played in Mizoram as a part of the 1st North East NSS Festival 2022 at Paljor Stadium.
The slew of events for the day included a Zumba session and indigenous games exhibition at Paljor Stadium which was followed by workshop on preparation of CV & Facing Interview and Life Skill Training conducted by Faculty Development Trainer, Soft Skills Consultant & Founder, Skillfinity, Anjan Chowdhary, at Manan Kendra.
The programmed also had an introduction session of dance, songs and musical instruments by different States which was followed by a cultural show presented by Culture Department (SPIC MACAY).
