Across every sphere of creative expression whether cinema, theatre, music, dance, or film direction Sikkimese artists are stepping onto national and global platforms like never before.
The accolades and international recognition our local talent continues to earn are, first and foremost, the fruit of their own hard work, relentless dedication, and artistic brilliance. However, behind this creative flourishing lies a strong foundation: the proactive support, vision, and institutional backing of the Government of Sikkim.
Under the guidance of our Honourable Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir, and former MLA Madam Krishna Kumari Rai, the state has actively created pathways for our local youth to thrive. Through key government bodies like the Information & Public Relations (IPR) Department and the Cultural Department Government of Sikkim, we have moved beyond temporary events toward building long-term platforms and providing the resources our artists need to grow.
The Visionary Leadership Behind Sikkim’s Cultural Resurgence the extraordinary transformation of Sikkim’s art and cultural landscape is direct proof of the compassionate and far sighted vision of our Honourable Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir.
Under his transformative leadership, art is no longer treated as a mere pastime or secondary pursuit, but as a vital pillar of state pride, youth empowerment, and cultural identity. Shri Golay sir has consistently extended an open door and an open heart to creative minds across all fields from veteran masters preserving our ancestral roots to budding creators experimenting with modern forms. His unwavering belief in the potential of Sikkimese youth has given an unprecedented boost of confidence to an entire generation of performers, filmmakers, musicians, and fine artists.
Working shoulder to shoulder in this grassroots cultural revival, former MLA Madam Krishna Kumari Rai has been a source of empathy, grace, and continuous encouragement for our artistic community. Her tireless dedication to community welfare and youth enrichment has created a nurturing environment where women, youth, and traditional artisans alike feel valued and heard. Madam Krishna Kumari Rai’s constant involvement in cultural events and her heartfelt advocacy for local talent have provided a steady hand of support, ensuring that creators from every corner of Sikkim regardless of background or geographic location are given equal opportunities to shine. Together, their unconditional leadership has built an inclusive ecosystem where Sikkim’s heritage and modern artistic expressions thrive side by side.
Building World-Class Capacity: Masterclasses, Mentorship, and Global Connections
To ensure our local artists do not just perform, but excel on competitive national and global stages, our government has prioritized structured capacity building over temporary entertainment.
True empowerment comes when local talent is equipped with modern technical skills, industry exposure, and world-class mentorship right here on home soil.
1. The Sikkim Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan (SKBS) Continuum
The Sikkim Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan (SKBS) has evolved into a premier incubator for creative learning and professional development in Sikkim:
Seasons 1 & 2 (Foundational Phase): Initiated and organized by Voice NGO, the inaugural season at Manan Kendra, Gangtok, and the second season at Namchi Town Hall laid the groundwork. They united artists across regions, celebrating our cultural pioneers while identifying raw, grassroots talent in music, dance, and drama.
Season 3 (Institutional Masterclass Model): Organized directly by the Sikkim Art, Culture & Heritage Development Board under the Cultural Department Government of sikkim the third season at Manan Kendra marked a major shift toward high level professionalization.
During Season 3, we transformed Manan Kendra into a multi-disciplinary academy, hosting specialized masterclasses across six major domains:
Film & Direction: Interactive sessions led by acclaimed filmmakers, directors, and screenwriters including Prashant Rasaily, Tribeny Rai, Samten Bhutia, B.K. Agarwal, and Biswas Timsina (BT Kancha) focusing on narrative structure, cinematography, and film production.
Theatre & Performing Arts: Advanced workshops conducted by veteran theatre directors like Bipin Kumar and Souti Chakraborty, training local actors in stagecraft, voice modulation, and dramatic expression.
Music & Composition: Technical masterclasses under the guidance of Sudip Baral, exploring music arrangement, vocal dynamics, and sound engineering.
Dance & Choreography: Professional movement and choreography sessions mentored by renowned dance exponent Kamal Rai.
Fashion & Runway: High-fashion styling, grooming, and runway techniques taught by industry experts Anjli R. Gill and Alesia Raut.
Fine Arts & Visual Media: Creative workshops led by Sishir Thapa, exploring visual storytelling, painting, and contemporary art forms.
2. The Sikkim International Film Festival (SIFF) Alongside SKBS, the inaugural Sikkim International Film Festival (SIFF) held in Gangtok served as a historic milestone for Sikkimese cinema. By hosting celebrated filmmakers, producers, national actors, and international delegates, SIFF achieved two major goals:
Direct Networking for Local Creators: Young Sikkimese directors, screenwriters, and technicians gained direct access to national film bodies, production houses, and festival programmers without having to leave the state.
Exposing Sikkim to Global Standards: Local talent participated in film screenings, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions with international industry leaders, learning firsthand about global distribution, co-productions, and international festival circuits.
Through these combined platforms, we are building a complete pipeline for Sikkimese creatives moving from initial talent identification to world-class technical training, direct mentorship, and global market exposure.
Nurturing Youth and Celebrating Musical Excellence Our state’s musical talent has also found exceptional opportunities through structured grassroots platforms. Initiatives like Sikkim Idol (organised by Hamro Varta Television), which launched its preliminary auditions on March 15, 2021, and state-level competitions like The Golden Voice of Sikkim have played a critical role in discovering and refining raw local talent.
An inspiring example of what our youth can achieve with the right encouragement is Jetshen Dohna Lama (born April 2013), a talented young singer from Pakyong District. After winning Season 9 of the national television singing competition Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs in 2023, her academic education and professional vocal training were fully sponsored by our Honourable Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir. Jetshen is just one of many individuals who have felt this direct support. Standing as a true guardian of Sikkim, Honourable Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir has demonstrated a level of personal care, patronage, and vision for our youth that is truly unprecedented in the history of our state.
International Recognition & Strategic Cross-Border Engagements A proud testament to this growing momentum was our participation in The 3rd International Nepali Film Awards (INFA Awards 2026), held on August 15, 2026, at Hotel Yak & Yeti in Kathmandu, Nepal. A high-level delegation led by Shri Sanjay Dilpali Rai, Chairperson of the Sikkim Art, Culture & Heritage Development Board, and Shri Tashi Tshering Bhutia, Chairperson of the Sikkim Film Promotion Board (Sikkim Music, Drama, Dance & Film Board), along with esteemed board members was invited to represent Sikkim at this grand event.
The ceremony marked a glorious moment for Sikkimese cinema:
Our own Sikkimese actress, Shyamashree Sherpa, was honored with the prestigious Best Debut Actress award. Renowned Sikkimese creator Biswas Timshina (popularly known as BT Kancha) earned a distinguished nomination for Best Screenplay.
Following the awards ceremony in Kathmandu, our delegation convened high-level meetings with prominent veteran actors, directors, and leading figures of the Nepali film industry. During these interaction sessions, our team actively pitched and shared the transformative vision and film-friendly policies of Honourable Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir inviting cross border collaborations, joint ventures, and promoting Sikkim as an ideal filming destination.
Driving Film Tourism & Global Collaborations Because of this collective momentum, Sikkimese artists are now regularly featured in major film productions and are bringing home prestigious international awards. Concurrently, major production houses particularly from the internationally acclaimed Nepali film industry are choosing Sikkim as their primary filming location.
This shift highlights the dedicated leadership of Shri G.T Dhungel Honourable Minister Culture Department,Shri Sanjay Dilpali Rai and Shri Tashi Tshering Bhutia. Working closely under the vision of the Honourable Chief Minister, their leadership continues to build clear, robust, and accessible platforms for our local talent.
Patronage Beyond Borders: Empowering Artists Across Boundaries What truly distinguishes the current state leadership is that this patrons’ spirit extends beyond administrative boundaries. Under the benevolent vision of Honourable Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) sir and the supportive outreach of former MLA Madam Krishna Kumari Rai, Sikkim has emerged as a beacon of warmth and patronage for creative voices throughout the Eastern Himalayas and neighboring regions. By welcoming artists, performers, and cultural ambassadors from across the region, they have fostered an atmosphere of shared heritage, solidarity, and cross border harmony.
Whether funding scholarships, supporting struggling artists, providing medical and welfare aid to cultural veterans, or sponsoring ambitious international projects, Shri Golay sir and Madam Krishna Kumari Rai have shown that true patronage knows no bounds. Their unconditional commitment ensures that anyone who contributes to the preservation, enrichment, and evolution of our shared arts and culture finds a supportive home in Sikkim.
Looking Ahead
The growing presence of Sikkimese artists in national and international media is clear evidence of a thriving cultural ecosystem. By pairing raw, authentic Sikkimese talent with dedicated state encouragement, we are opening doors to the world ensuring that our culture, our stories, and our people receive the global recognition they deserve.
