An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered at Lachen CP/PS in connection with the death of a 3½-year-old girl in Lachen. The case has been registered as Lachen CP/PS UD Case No. 01/2026 dated 16 January 2026 under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

The deceased has been identified as Shriya Das daughter of Bipesh Das, a resident of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

According to police, a written FIR was received on 16 January 2026 at around 2:50 pm from Palzang Lachenpa (62), son of late Limak Lachenpa and a resident of Lachen, Mangan District. In his complaint, he stated that a housemaid, Pirita Oraon (34), wife of Bipesh Das, along with her daughter Shiya Das, had been residing in his house at Lachen as domestic help for the past one year.

As per the statement of the child’s mother, on 16 January 2026 at around 11:30 am, while she was engaged in household work in the kitchen, her daughter was playing alone outside the house. During this time, an iron railing that had been propped against the wall reportedly fell on the child, trapping her underneath.

The child was immediately rescued by her mother, who then informed the nurse at the Lachen PHSC (HWC). The nurse rushed to the spot and checked the child’s vitals, but found her unresponsive and not breathing. The police station was subsequently informed.

Police personnel from Lachen CP/PS, including a woman police officer, reached the place of occurrence, conducted an enquiry, took photographs, recorded statements of witnesses, and completed necessary legal formalities. The body of the deceased was forwarded to District Hospital, Mangan, for post-mortem examination along with her legal guardian, under the escort of a woman police officer.
