Gangtok, Sikkim: The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology (SSCS&T), Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, has successfully produced and distributed Shiitake mushroom spawn to Self-Help Groups (SHGs), women entrepreneurs and progressive farmers from different districts of Sikkim, marking an important step towards promoting sustainable livelihoods and women-led entrepreneurship through science and technology.

The initiative has been undertaken under the Women Technology Park (WTP) Project, supported by the SEED Division, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The project aims to establish a Women Technology Park at Namli, Gangtok, along with a Training Centre/Community Facilitation Centre for the transfer and demonstration of appropriate technologies to enhance the livelihoods of economically disadvantaged women, particularly those from rural areas.

The project focuses on empowering women through skill development, hands-on training, technology demonstration and capacity building, with particular emphasis on enabling progressive farmers and women’s groups to develop enterprises and explore opportunities for commercialisation within the State.

The production and availability of quality Shiitake mushroom spawn through SSCS&T is expected to provide an impetus to mushroom cultivation and strengthen livelihood opportunities for farmers and women’s groups across Sikkim. Access to quality spawn, coupled with scientific knowledge and improved cultivation practices, can help beneficiaries establish more consistent production systems and gradually develop mushroom cultivation as a viable income-generating activity.

The initiative reflects the Council’s commitment to taking science and technology beyond laboratories and institutions and making them accessible at the community level.
“Our aim is not merely to produce mushroom spawn, but to create an ecosystem where science and technology directly contribute to the economic empowerment of our farmers, especially women. The successful production and distribution of Shiitake spawn is an important step towards creating sustainable livelihood opportunities and strengthening the income potential of farmers and SHGs.”

Continued Technical Support for Farmers
SSCS&T has further assured beneficiaries that its support will extend beyond the initial distribution of spawn. Quality Shiitake mushroom spawn will continue to be made available to farmers, subject to availability and programme requirements.

Continued institutional and technical support is expected to assist farmers in maintaining regular production cycles, expanding cultivation and gradually moving towards sustainable and commercially viable mushroom enterprises.

The initiative also highlights the importance of integrating research, technology and community-level implementation. By developing, demonstrating and facilitating access to appropriate technologies, SSCS&T is working towards transforming scientific interventions into practical livelihood opportunities for communities across the State.

Science for Women, Technology for Livelihoods
The successful production and distribution of Shiitake mushroom spawn under the Women Technology Park Project reinforces the Council’s commitment to making science inclusive, practical and people-centric. The initiative seeks to encourage more women, SHGs and progressive farmers to adopt mushroom cultivation as a viable livelihood and entrepreneurial activity.

With continued institutional support, scientific expertise and active participation from the farming community, the initiative has the potential to evolve into a sustainable model of women-led rural entrepreneurship and technology-based livelihood generation in Sikkim.

The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology remains committed to facilitating the dissemination of appropriate technologies and supporting farmers through the provision of quality Shiitake mushroom spawn, subject to programme requirements and availability. Through such initiatives, the Council continues its efforts to ensure that the benefits of science and technology reach the grassroots and contribute meaningfully to sustainable livelihoods and the socio-economic empowerment of the people of Sikkim.
