SPCB Sikkim concludes “Waste Management Hackathon” competition for college students

Gangtok, 4th May 2024: With an objective to further the idea of waste management and to encourage college going students towards taking care of their locality in terms of Waste Management, the State Pollution Control Board, Sikkim organized a state level Waste Management Hackathon competition for college students across Sikkim. The competition was conducted in two phases – 1. A video making engagement of the problems of local communities in their areas 2. Presentation on the videos made on the issues of the locality and their potential solutions.


11 teams from colleges across Sikkim participated in the Hackathon presentation competition and first prize was bagged by Sikkim Government Nursing College, Gangtok with the second and third positions being bagged by the students of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Gangtok.


The day also had students of eco-clubs of PM Shri Government Girls School, Deorali and Government Senior Secondary School, Tadong present the various activities of the eco clubs in their schools.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gopal Pradhan, Member Secretary, State Pollution Control Board, Sikkim congratulated all the students who participated in the competition and encouraged them to further the idea of waste management in their respective colleges and communities. He also reiterated the importance of practical application of the ideas of waste management and reinforced amongst students and teachers from various colleges and schools to take waste management as a priority in their respective colleges and schools.


The judges for the Waste Management Hackathon competition were as follows; Dr. Santanu Gupta, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Majitar, Ms. Jerusa Shrestha, Joint Director, Urban Development Department, Ms. Priyadarshini Shrestha, Consultant, SBM, Rural Development Department, Mr. Dadiram Dhakal, Assistant Engineer, Gangtok Municipal Corporation and Ms. Nnaumrata Arora Singh, Founder Director, Zemyna Foundation, New Delhi. The program was supported on ground by 24hours Inspired.
