Sikkim reported the lowest number of murder FIRs with only 9 cases, according to the NCRB report 2023. Alongside Sikkim, Nagaland (21), Mizoram (31), Goa (44), and Manipur (47) also recorded minimal murder cases.

Similarly, Uttar Pradesh registered the highest number of murder FIRs at 3,491, followed by Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. These five states collectively accounted for 43.92 percent of the total murder cases across the country. The states with the fewest murder cases included Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Goa, and Manipur.

Furthermore, among the Union Territories, Delhi topped the list with 509 murder cases, while Lakshadweep reported none. Jharkhand had the highest murder rate at 4 per lakh population, with Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Assam, and Odisha also reporting higher rates.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recorded a total of 28,522 First Information Reports (FIRs) related to murders. This translates to an average of 78 murders daily or more than three every hour, indicating a slight decrease from the 29,272 cases in 2021 and 29,193 in 2020.
