Vigyan Kendra South Sikkim in collaboration with ICAR-NINFET (National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology) – Kolkata organised a day-long workshop along with demonstration and input distribution programme at KVK South Sikkim.
The dignitaries present in the programme were Dr. Sanjoy Debnath, Head-cum-Nodal Officer – NEH, ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata; Dr. S.B. Roy, Head (Transfer of Technology), ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata; Indra Prasad Shivakoti, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK South Sikkim along with Scientific, Technical and Administrative staff of KVK South Sikkim.
The beneficiary farmers present were members farmers of Bermiok-Tokal Farmers Producers Organisation and Progressive farmers of Ruchung (adopted village of KVK, South Sikkim).
Dr. S.B. Roy from ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata gave a brief outline of the Research Institute ICAR NINFET and its mandated works in transfer of natural fibre technology suitable for farmers.
Dr. Sanjoy Debnath, Head-cum-Nodal Officer, NEH, ICAR-NINFET through his PowerPoint presentation detailed about the advantages of the jute agro textile mulch. He also stressed on the use of this mulch on high value crops for cost-effective returns to the farmers and its key feature of being biodegradable.
To acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Sanjoy Debnath for his various contribution in convergence programmes of ICAR-NINFET towards KVK South Sikkim and the farmers, a felicitation session was also held. A method demonstration of use of Jute agrotextile was held in the KVK farm which was followed by the Input Distribution programme wherein farmers were benefitted with jute mulch.
The second half of the programme was held at Chuba village for the impact assessment-cum-interview for the proposed Short Term Training Programme for manufacturing/weaving of woollen items to the members of Chubako Weavers.
