The State of Sikkim actively participated in the Consultative Meeting on the Formulation of the National Yak Breeding Policy held at Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam, on 8th June 2026. Dr. K.T. Bhutia, Principal Director, represented the Government of Sikkim at the meeting as a stakeholder and partner State in the development and conservation of yak resources.

The meeting was organized by the National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY), ICAR, Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, and was chaired by the Deputy Director General, ICAR, Government of India. The consultation brought together members of the National Task Force, researchers, technical experts, and representatives from yak-rearing States and Union Territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The deliberations focused on the formulation of a comprehensive National Yak Breeding Policy aimed at promoting scientific breeding practices, conservation of indigenous yak germplasm, genetic improvement programmes, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities dependent on yak husbandry in the Himalayan region.

A significant highlight of the programme was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY), Dirang, and the University of Veterinary Science and Fisheries, Khanapara. The MoU is expected to strengthen collaborative research, academic exchange, and technological interventions for the advancement of the yak sector in the country.

The participation of Sikkim in this important national consultation underscores the State’s commitment to preserving indigenous livestock resources, promoting sustainable livestock development, and contributing to national efforts aimed at strengthening the yak husbandry sector.
