20-year-old college student pursuing his Bachelor Degree in Commerce mysteriously dies at Nar Bhadhur Bhandari college campus.
Speaking with Sikkim Chronicle, Principal NBBDC Dr D Phurohit on the sudden death of Sam Tshering Lepcha said, ” I got a call from one student of fourth semester stating that one student fainted at stairs of the college campus and within 10 minutes we rushed him to Central Referral Hospital, Manipal”
On asking the principal about the medical facilities of the college stated that, “There was a medical facility five years ago but due to unavailability of a doctor, the facility was closed. And after I took charge of Principal I have been trying since past few months and applied for dispensary in the college. Indeed, it’s very important for a college to have one, and we are trying our best to have one and soon within coming two months we will have one in our campus”
“The family members of the deceased has been informed, and the autopsy is due and after the process the reason for the death will be cleared” he added
Retaliating on the situation, one of his classmate said, “If we had medical assistance at college campus, there would have been hope to save him.”
Another student said, “As soon as he fainted at the stairs we brought him outside principal’s cabin the administration took so much time to arrange even one vehicle”
” A college with almost four thousand students lacks in medical facilities which is unfair, and we are very sad we had to lose our friend because of it. Even today if medical assistance was provided in right time then he could have been saved” he added
The health care section of UGC guidelines also states that, “The assistance under this item is available for construction of building for the Health Centre and for purchase of non-expendable equipment. No assistance for any post is permissible under this item(except for Central universities and UGC maintained deemed to be universities).; and the university has to make arrangements under maintenance grant or from the user or some other source, for purchase of medicines and expendable equipment. The procedure for sanction and disbursement of assistance under this item would be the same as for items under Campus Development.”
