Manipur: October 12, 2022, (via Imphal Free Press): Journalists in Manipur under the banner of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) and the Manipur Hills Journalists Union held a joint sit-in protest against the continued threats to freedom of the press in the state, in Imphal Wednesday.

Mediapersons, staging the protest at Keishampat Leimajam Community Hall, Imphal, demanded that the media be free from all external influences in the production of news.

The protest was held following the threat to AMWJU president by members of some proscribed outfits in the state on Monday, in connection with the publication of certain stories.

Following the incident, an emergency meeting of all members of AMWJU, EGM and MHJU was convened on Tuesday morning at the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul in Imphal. During the meeting, it was resolved to organize a sit-in protest on Wednesday.

Following the Monday incident, all media related works in the state were put on halt with immediate effect. There has been no news broadcast nor publications since Monday evening. There will be no newspaper publications on Thursday either.

The sit-in protest, which began at 9 am will continue till 2 pm. It will be followed by a meeting with civil society organisations at 3 pm.
