Darjeeling– The Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Sports Association (DGHSA) committee, under the dynamic leadership of Dennis Lama, is fervently preparing for the 108th Herlihy Cup. Preparations are in full swing as the team works diligently at the Lebong ground, ensuring everything is set for the historic football tournament.
Despite challenging weather conditions, with heavy rains lashing the region, the dedicated members of DGHSA, many of whom are ex-football players, have taken it upon themselves to rectify measurements and realign the goalposts, showcasing their unwavering passion for football. Their commitment to the sport and the community is truly inspiring, as they strive to maintain the high standards and traditions of the tournament.
The Herlihy Cup, dating back to 1917, holds a significant place in Darjeeling’s history. The beautifully engraved, elegant trophy was donated by Jack O’Mahogany, a British man, in memory of his aunt, Mrs. Herlihy, who passed away in Darjeeling. Made of pure silver, the trophy stands twenty-six inches tall and weighs approximately 3.4 kg. The tournament has always been highly coveted and sought-after, highlighting the pride and prestige of the competition.
As the 108th edition of the Herlihy Cup approaches, there is a growing appeal to the people of Darjeeling and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) to come forward and support this historic event. The collective effort and enthusiasm of the community will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the tournament, ensuring it remains a cherished tradition for years to come.
