Gangtok, Jan 2: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on Friday launched a month-long online campaign titled “SKM Road Report”, aimed at highlighting the prevailing ground reality of road infrastructure across the state. As part of the initiative, the party will release constituency-wise video reports documenting the actual condition of roads in different regions of Sikkim.
The campaign has been launched against the backdrop of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government’s much-publicised promise of BIPASA — Bijli, Pani, Sadak, which was projected as a cornerstone of its governance agenda. The SDF, however, maintained that nearly two years into the SKM government’s tenure, the condition of roads across the state stands in sharp contrast to these assurances.
According to the SDF, deteriorating road conditions are visible across both rural interiors and urban centres, reflecting what the party described as neglect and poor maintenance. The party claimed that such conditions pose serious risks to public safety and have become a daily source of hardship for commuters, students, patients, traders, and emergency service providers.
Through the SKM Road Report, the SDF in it’s press release has said it aims to bring the lived experiences of the people onto a public platform and hold the present government accountable. Throughout the month of January, the party will systematically release visual evidence from every constituency, highlighting what it describes as a widening gap between the government’s promises and its performance on the ground.
The SDF asserted that infrastructure development cannot be reduced to slogans and publicity campaigns, stressing that roads are a basic necessity and a clear indicator of governance priorities. The party reiterated its commitment to raising public issues in a responsible manner, demanding accountability from those in power, and standing firmly with the people of Sikkim.
