The Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Gangtok District successfully organized a one-day Free Cataract Screening Camp for Senior Citizens at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok on 16th June 2025.
The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Health & Family Welfare Department and Greater Lions Eye Hospital, Siliguri.
The programme was led by Ms. Manikala Gurung, Social Welfare Officer, Gangtok District, along with her dedicated team of Social Welfare Inspectors (SWIs) and staff from District HUB, Gangtok. The camp witnessed a jubilant gathering of senior citizens from across the district, including:
- Lee AAL Old Age Shelter Home, Tintek
- Ranipool Shelter Home
- Senior citizens mobilized by Garib Jan Kalyan Prakosta Coordinators, among others
The organizing team played a crucial role in mobilizing eligible beneficiaries, screening necessary documents, verifying eligibility, and ensuring smooth execution of the camp.
The event commenced in the esteemed presence of Ms. Normit Lepcha, Secretary, Women, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Welfare Department; Mrs. Bandana Rai, Additional Secretary; and Mrs. Jyotshna Khatiwara, Assistant Director (Nutrition).
A specialized medical team from Greater Lions Eye Hospital, Siliguri conducted detailed eye examinations of the attending senior citizens. Individuals diagnosed with cataracts and found eligible were marked for free cataract surgery, scheduled to be conducted at the hospital in Siliguri in the coming days.
In addition, a team from STNM Hospital, Gangtok provided screening for non-communicable diseases and conducted basic blood tests, including blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, and other essential health assessments. The team also actively engaged in promoting mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of psychological well-being among the elderly.
The camp highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of senior citizens and demonstrated the strength of collaborative action in delivering essential healthcare services to the community.
