Conclave on “Science & Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community”


A two days Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, a conclave on Science & Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community was held on 11th and 12th November, 2022 at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati which was inaugurated by Shri Arjun Munda, Minister of Tribal Affairs, Government of India as the Chief Guest, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for the Ministry of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India as Special Guest with a host of dignitaries from other States of India.


The conclave had the participants from other States of India mostly North-Eastern and Sikkim was one of the participant which was represented by Department of Science & Technology and Department of Cooperation, Government of Sikkim.


The theme of the conclave was “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation & Transmission of Traditional Knowledge”


The products displayed and sold at Stall under SIKKIM was 1. Cardamom Mat 2. Stinging Nettle Tea 3. Stinging Nettle bag 4. Organic Powder Turmeric 5. Large Cardamom 6. Cardamom Fibre Mat and 7. Bamboo Handicrafts.
The stall had the products from different Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK), a scheme of “ Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY)” supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.

The State Nodal Department is Department of Science & Technology and the State Implementing Agency is Department of Cooperation. The scheme aims at enhancing the economic life of tribal artisans through value addition of their produce.


Various discussion and presentation was held at different auditorium venue with Sikkim representing on two topics by Department of Science & Technology on “ Mapping of predominant Livelihood system of Tribal Community and Identification of Gap areas for Science, Technology and Innovation interventions” and on “ a study on the issues of their nutritional potential, sustainable socio economy, ecology and conservation for tribal population of Sikkim”.
The conclave concluded with a Valedictory function where the host State thanked and appreciated everyone for successful participation in the Conclave and making it a success.
