Youths protest against Bharat Dong’s statement on Sikkim – Darjeeling merger; flouts DMA 2005, 16 detained

Youths took out protest march and burnt effigy at Central Park, Namchi of Bharat Dong, President Gorkha National Congress, Darjeeling against his recent statement on the Sikkim- Darjeeling merger.The incident took place around 1 PM.

The viral video surfaced on social media shows a group of youth holding ply cards and raising slogans ‘Sikkim Ama Zindabaad’ and also burning of effigy. The video was shot by a citizen from a building nearby.

Sikkim Chronicle reached out to Superintendent of Police South Sikkim and District Collector, South Sikkim to get more details on the development.

SP, South  Thakur Thapa informed SC over phone that the 16 youths demonstrated a protest against the statement made by Bharat Dong, President Gorkha National Congress Darjeeling  on Sikkim- Darjeeling merger issue. They even burnt an effigy in the heart of the town, Namchi. The protest flouted the Disaster Management Act 2005 and violated Section 144, thus the 16 youths have been taken into custody and detained. He further informed that the case shall be registered against the detained youths.

DC Bharani  Kumar  informed that the matter will be investigated thoroughly, and the south district administration shall issue a formal release after an appropriate action is taken.
