West Bengal logs first case of omicron variant

7 years old boy first tested positive in Hyderabad travelled to West Bengal and was screened positive for the Omicron variant.

“He is the states first patient for the new variant” informed the West Bengal health department today.

As per the travel history of the 7years old positive, he has arrived in Murshidabad district from Hyderabad with his parents.

Reports also state that the boy had tested positive back in Hyderabad but still travelled to West Bengal.

Earlier today, two foreign nationals in Telangana’s Hyderabad also tested positive for the Omicron variant during genome sequencing with both being asymptomatic. Telangana has a total of 3 cases now.

India has so far accounted for a total of 64 cases for the variant including the confirmed case in West Bengal with Rajasthan and Delhi reporting 4 cases each earlier on Tuesday.

The central and state governments are on high alert for the new Covid strain, which started in Botswana on November 11 this year, and subsequently surged in South Africa. It has already been declared a variant of concern by the World Health Organization.
