Dr. Pooja Basnett, Assistant Professor at Sikkim University, and her husband, Sunil Kumar Shrestha, Software Engineer at Cisco Systems, have successfully completed the challenging trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar on December 28, marking a remarkable personal and inspirational achievement.
The trek to Everest Base Camp, located at an altitude of about 5,364 metres, and the ascent of Kala Patthar at approximately 5,545 metres, are considered among the most demanding high-altitude trekking experiences in the world. The journey tests physical endurance, mental strength, and adaptability to extreme weather and low oxygen levels.
Speaking about the experience, Dr. Basnett described the expedition as both challenging and transformative. “The journey to Everest Base Camp was physically demanding, but it also taught us patience, resilience, and humility in the face of nature’s vastness,” she said. “Standing at Kala Patthar and witnessing Mount Everest up close was an overwhelming and deeply fulfilling moment.”
Sunil Kumar Shrestha highlighted the importance of preparation and teamwork during the trek. “High-altitude trekking is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Proper acclimatisation, discipline, and supporting each other throughout the journey were key to reaching our goal safely,” he stated.
Dr. Basnett added that the experience has reinforced valuable life lessons that extend beyond the mountains. “This trek reminded me that with consistent effort and belief, it is possible to overcome even the toughest challenges. I hope this inspires students and young professionals to pursue their dreams fearlessly,” she remarked.
The couple undertook the expedition after months of preparation, navigating rugged Himalayan terrain, snow-covered trails, and unpredictable weather conditions in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Their successful completion of the trek has drawn appreciation from colleagues, students, friends, and well-wishers.
Expressing gratitude, Shrestha said, “We are thankful to our families, guides, and support teams whose encouragement and expertise made this journey possible.”
