Governor and Chief Minister Launch “Mero School, Mero Abhiyaan” at State Republic Day Celebrations
Gangtok: In an initiative aimed at strengthening grassroots innovation in school education, the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, along with Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), formally launched “Mero School, Mero Abhiyaan” during the State-level Republic Day celebrations at Paljor Stadium on January 26.
The flagship programme of the Education Department seeks to transform schools by empowering teachers as innovators and change-makers, recognising that meaningful and sustainable improvement in education must emerge from within the system itself. The initiative will be implemented from the coming academic session, marking a shift towards bottom-up, locally rooted educational reform across the State.

Speaking with Sikkim Chronicle , Sandeep Tambe, Principal Secretary, Education Department, said the programme reflects a new way of thinking about school reform.
“Mero School, Mero Abhiyaan is about trusting our teachers and giving them the space to innovate. Solutions to challenges like learning gaps, student engagement, and dropouts already exist within our classrooms—we are now creating a system to recognise, strengthen, and scale them,” he said.
Highlighting the broader vision, Tambe added, “Every school in Sikkim operates in a unique context. By encouraging locally relevant innovations and collective ownership, we are building vibrant learning communities where improvement is driven by commitment, creativity, and professional pride.”
The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises innovation, motivation, and incentivisation in education. It will identify, document, and scale field-tested school-based innovations through a transparent, multi-stage selection process involving district screening, field verification, and final state-level selection.
The Governor, in his address, underscored the importance of contextual solutions in education, while the Chief Minister reiterated the State Government’s commitment to empowering teachers and strengthening public confidence in government schools.
“This initiative is not merely an award programme,” Tambe further remarked. “It is a movement to institutionalise innovation, foster peer learning, and create a living repository of best practices that will inform future policy and capacity building in Sikkim’s education system.”
Selected innovators will be honoured with the State Teachers Award (Innovation) on Teacher’s Day, 5th September, along with opportunities for wider replication of their work across schools.
