Gangtok, January 7, 2026:A Public Stakeholder Consultation on the National Landslide Mitigation Project for the Lumsey area, Tadong, was successfully conducted on January 7, 2026, at the Mt. Zion School Complex. The programme was organised by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), with the objective of strengthening community participation and ensuring transparent implementation of landslide risk reduction measures in the area.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Shri Prabhakar Rai, Director, SSDMA, who highlighted the objectives of the National Landslide Mitigation Project and its critical importance in addressing recurring landslide hazards in the Lumsey area. He emphasised that the project aims to enhance slope stability, safeguard lives and property, and strengthen long-term disaster resilience through scientific and sustainable mitigation measures.

The Relief Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, presented a detailed project brief, outlining the scope of work, proposed timelines, and the need for close inter-departmental coordination to ensure smooth execution. The briefing underscored the collaborative approach involving multiple line departments for effective implementation and monitoring of the project.
A comprehensive geo-technical investigation report was presented by Shri Keshar Luitel, Additional Director, SSDMA. The presentation covered site-specific geological and geo-technical findings, identified risk zones, and proposed mitigation measures tailored to the local terrain and vulnerability profile. The proposed interventions aim to reduce landslide susceptibility while ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Delivering the keynote address, the Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Culture, Shri G. T. Dhungel, expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister for his untiring efforts in bringing the National Landslide Mitigation Project to the State. He appreciated the leadership of the concerned department and reiterated the government’s commitment to disaster risk reduction. Emphasising the role of local communities, the Minister stated that public participation as key stakeholders is essential for the successful and sustainable implementation of the project.
A public interaction session followed, moderated by Councillor Shri Milan Gautam, during which residents of the Lumsey and adjoining areas actively shared their concerns, suggestions, and expectations. The session facilitated constructive dialogue between the community and officials, reinforcing the importance of inclusive planning and stakeholder engagement.
The consultation was attended by senior officers from the Water Resources Department, Urban Development Department, Power Department, Mines and Geology Department, Public Health Engineering Department, along with the District Collector, Gangtok. Their presence reflected the integrated and multi-sectoral approach being adopted for landslide mitigation in the State.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Rajiv Roka, Director, SSDMA, who acknowledged the participation of all stakeholders and reaffirmed SSDMA’s commitment to implementing the project in a transparent, scientific, and community-centric manner.
