National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division (FOD), Ministry of Statistics and Program implementation (MoSPI), Govt. of India is celebrating 75th anniversary of NSS during the year 2025. As a part of this year long celebrations, National Statistics Office, FOD, Regional Office, Gangtok organized activities earmarked for the month of August on 21st & 22nd August 2025.
On 22nd August one day data user conference was organized at Majhitar , Rangpo where in participants from various industrial units and other stakeholders attended the programme. Shri Thupden Geleg, Joint Director, Directorate of Economics, Statistics, Monitoring and Evalutaion, Govt. of Sikkim attended the programme as Chief Guest.
Initiating the programme, Shri D R Sharma, Assistant Director, NSO, RO Gangtok welcomed the participants and provided brief overview of the activities of the Ministry and importance of surveys conducted by the NSO. Shri D R Sharma also highlighted the importance of various surveys conducted by NSS and how it was used in formulation government policies.
Mrs Tenzin Choden SSO in her presentations provided overview on WholeSale Price Index prepared on the basis of prices of Primary articles , fuel & power , manufactured products etc. being prepared on the basis of prices collected from the units. She also made detail presentations on the procedure of submission of prices for revision of base year from 2011-12 to 2022-23 for preparation Wholesale Price Indices(WPI) and Input & Output Producers” Price Indices . Shri Shivraj Rai shared the factsheet and key findings and provided insights about contributions of various sectors and sub-sector towards nation’s economy in terms of GDP,GVA, employment, Capital formation, exports etc. , at state as well as national level as per the reports published on the basis of Annual Survey of Industries 2022-23 .
Shri Thupden Geleg, Joint Director and Chief Guest in his address spoke about the importance & usage of the reports published by NSS & DESME prepared on the basis of surveys conducted and urged the participants to provide timely and accurate data to both central & state govt. agencies . Shri Tubai Dutta SSO provided brief insights about other surveys conducted by NSS and also offered vote of thanks. Shri Keshar Singh Poudyal, AD DESME along with fifty four participants from Industrial units attended the programme.
Similarly, on 21/08/2025 with a view to create awareness about various surveys conducted by NSO and its importance, a community discussion in rural area was held at Suldung-Kamling Gram Panchayat Bhawan under Soreng District. Shri G. T Lepcha , President, Smt. Tika Maya Kami , Vice President and other Panchayat members of the GPU attend the programme as Chief Guest, and special guests respectively. Shri D R Sharma, Assistant Director, NSO, RO Gangtok welcomed the participants and provided brief overview of the activities of the Ministry and importance of surveys conducted by the NSO. Shri Sharma also highlighted the importance of various surveys conducted by NSS and how it was used in formulation government policies. He also urged the people and panchayat to extend cooperation to the NSS officials in conducting surveys in their area. Shri Tubai Dutta, Senior Statistical Officer talked about large-scale surveys being conducted by NSO viz. Periodic Labour Force Survey, ASUSE, Socio-economic Survey, collection of prices from different markets for preparation of Price Index etc
Shri G . T Lepcha Panchayat expressed his gratitude to NSO for organizing such enlightening programme in their GPU and assured to extend cooperation to NSS officials whenever they visit for data collection.
At the end of the programme a Plantation Drive was also held in the compound of, Panchayat Bhawan in the afternoon session. Panchayats of GPU, staffs of Village Administrative Centre and officials of RO Gangtok actively participated in the drive. Flowering and decorative plants were planted around school compound during the drive.
With a view to publicize and create awareness among general public about various surveys, scheme pamphlets & brochures were also distributed to Panchayats, people, and shopkeepers in and around GPU.
