Jorethang: In a significant step towards strengthening healthcare services in South Sikkim, the Jorethang Community Health Centre (CHC) has been equipped with a newly established 7-bedded Dialysis Unit, which is scheduled to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Sikkim PS Tamang on January 14, 2026.
Ahead of the inauguration, a high-level inspection of the facility was carried out today by the Health Minister GT Dhungel to assess its preparedness and ensure the smooth commencement of services. The visit was undertaken in the presence of the Health Secretary and senior officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department. During the inspection, a detailed review of the unit’s infrastructural readiness, installation of medical equipment, availability of essential utilities, and overall operational preparedness was conducted. Final arrangements and logistical aspects were also discussed to ensure that the unit becomes fully functional from the day of its inauguration.
“The establishment of the dialysis unit at Jorethang CHC marks a major milestone in the expansion of renal care services in the region. Until now, patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases had to travel long distances to tertiary healthcare institutions for regular dialysis, often facing physical, financial, and emotional hardships. With the commissioning of this facility, patients from Jorethang and surrounding areas will be able to access life-saving dialysis services closer to home, significantly easing their burden.” said the Minister.
The 7-bedded dialysis unit is expected to cater not only to residents of South Sikkim but also to patients from neighbouring regions and adjoining states, including parts of Darjeeling. By decentralising specialised healthcare services, the unit will play a crucial role in improving early intervention, continuity of care, and overall quality of life for renal patients.
“This initiative reflects the Government of Sikkim’s sustained commitment to strengthening public healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural, semi-urban, and border regions. The focus on expanding specialised services at the district and sub-district levels underscores the government’s vision of ensuring equitable and accessible healthcare for all sections of society” he added.
With the inauguration scheduled for January 14, the dialysis unit at Jorethang CHC is poised to become a vital healthcare lifeline for hundreds of patients, marking yet another important advancement in Sikkim’s ongoing efforts to build a resilient and people-centric healthcare system.
