Pakyong, June 2 (IPR): In an effort to combine health and cooperative development, the Cooperation Department of Pakyong District organised a comprehensive health camp today at the premises of the Bering-Tareythang Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) Ltd. The event was held as part of the celebrations commemorating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood and the International Year of Cooperatives 2025.
Organised in collaboration with the Zilla Panchayat of Bering-Tareythang-Sudunglakha Territorial Constituency and the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Sikkim, the camp aimed to deliver essential healthcare services directly to the rural population, with a special emphasis on preventive care and women’s health.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Zilla Member Bering–Tareythang Sudunglakha, Mrs Ranjana Rasaily; Additional Registrar, Mrs Kesang Yanki, District Planning Officer (DPO) Mr Sonam Zangpo Bhutia and officials from the Cooperation and Health Departments, along with members of the Bering-Tareythang MPCS.
The health camp offered a wide range of free medical services, including General Health Consultation (Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, Oxygen Level, Hemoglobin, Thyroid), Dental Services, Eye Check-ups (Optometry), AYUSH consultation (Traditional Indian Medicine) and specialised Gynecological Consultations including Breast Examination and HPV Screening. Special privacy corners were arranged for women’s health screenings, ensuring a safe, dignified and confidential environment that prioritised their comfort and well-being.
A team of healthcare professionals facilitated the camp, including Dr Lidiya Rai (Medical Officer), Dr Kulyan Lama (Medical Officer, AYUSH), Dr Chumila Bhutia and Dr Pratiksha Basnet (Dental Surgeons), Ms Mayalmit Lepcha and Ms Arati Sharma (Optometrists).
Speaking at the event, Additional Registrar Mrs Kesang Yanki highlighted the role of cooperatives not just as economic enterprises but as community institutions aimed at the welfare of their members. She emphasised the importance of grassroots outreach programmes and announced a series of upcoming initiatives, including plantation drives with the Forest Department and awareness programmes in partnership with the Education Department.
Mrs Yanki also lauded the exemplary functioning of the Tareythang MPCS, describing it as one of the most progressive and effective cooperatives in the district. She noted its wide-ranging activities, such as banking business, credit business, common service centre, Van Dhan Vikas Kendra, and milk collection centre, apart from consumer business, which make it a model for other cooperative societies in the region.
She extended her gratitude to the Chief Medical Officer of Pakyong and the entire medical team for their unwavering support and commitment to community health.
The camp witnessed active participation from women members of the cooperative, who benefitted from the tailored health services provided in a dignified and confidential setting.
