A 22-year-old woman from Dzongu village in North Sikkim died on Monday after allegedly being assaulted by her boyfriend at Marchak under Ranipool Police Station limits.

According to sources, both the victim and the accused are residents of Dzongu. The woman had reportedly come to Marchak to visit her relatives when the incident occurred at around 2:00 PM on December 29. During her visit, an altercation is said to have taken place between the woman and her boyfriend, following which she allegedly sustained serious injuries.

Family members and local residents, along with the police, rushed the woman to Manipal Hospital for treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital.

Ranipool Police immediately took cognisance of the matter and arrested the accused boyfriend. He is currently in police custody as further investigation is underway. Police officials stated that statements of witnesses are being recorded and all aspects of the case are being examined to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
