Abhishek Limboo, son of Sikkim, has set a historic record by becoming the first Technical Entry Army Officer (Lieutenant) from the state, securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 17.
In a land known for its brave hearts and proud soldiers, this achievement marks not just a personal milestone but a moment of immense pride for the entire state of Sikkim. At just 25 years of age, Abhishek Limboo’s journey from the quiet village of Dojak Sangmoo in Ravangla, South Sikkim, to earning a commission in the Indian Army stands as a powerful story of perseverance, sacrifice, and unshakeable belief.
A Dream Rooted in the Hills of Sikkim
Growing up in Dojak Sangmoo, Abhishek was surrounded by stories of courage and patriotism. In Sikkim, it is often said that from every two houses, one brave soldier serves the nation. Inspired by this tradition and especially by the legendary Param Vir Chakra awardee Dhan Singh Thapa, whose story he learned during his school days at JNV Ravangla, Abhishek developed a deep desire to join the Indian Army — not just as a soldier, but as an officer.
However, dreams alone do not create history. It is the relentless pursuit of those dreams that makes the difference.
Humble Beginnings, Strong Foundations
Born into a financially weak family, Abhishek understood the value of hard work from an early age. His parents ran a small hotel in Ravangla, working tirelessly to support the family. Though resources were limited, emotional support was abundant.
“I could not desire more than necessary because of our situation,” he reflects. “But I am extremely grateful to my parents for always supporting me.”
That gratitude became his strength. Their sacrifices became his motivation.
He began his primary education at Generation Next Academy, Ravangla, and Dojak Junior High School, later completing his matriculation from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ravangla. With a natural inclination towards mathematics and science, he was always curious about how things worked. This curiosity led him to pursue a Diploma in Civil Engineering from CCCT, Chisopani, and later higher studies at NIT Sikkim.
His academic journey was shaped by mentors who left a lasting impact on his life — his late Hindi teacher Vijay Singh Dangi Sir, his project guide Phur Tshering Sherpa Sir at CCCT, and his mentor Dr. Neelanjan Dutta at NIT. Beyond academics, his early involvement in church and Sunday school instilled discipline, humility, and strong moral values.
The Road to Becoming an Officer
Abhishek was aware of the various officer entries offered by the Indian Army — NDA, TES, CDS, TGC, SSC-Tech, NCC Special Entry — and he chose the SSC-Tech entry route. His first SSB attempt ended in a conference out, the final stage of the selection process. It was a near miss.
But instead of giving up, he introspected deeply. The Services Selection Board looks for 15 Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs), and Abhishek made it his mission to develop himself holistically. He worked on his communication skills, improved his awareness of current affairs, and built confidence in expressing his thoughts clearly during tasks like group discussions and lecturette sessions.
After graduation, he joined Larsen & Toubro to support himself and his family. Balancing a demanding job with preparation was challenging. During office breaks, he read newspapers to stay updated. At night, he studied for two hours before sleeping.
“Sometimes I felt like I was pushing too hard while others were relaxing,” he shares. “But since I was not the privileged one, I had to push my limits.”
His determination paid off in November 2025, when he appeared for his second SSB interview — and this time, he succeeded.
A Moment of Fulfilment
Securing AIR 17 at the All India level and becoming the first Technical Entry Army Officer (Lieutenant) from Sikkim is no small feat. For Abhishek, the moment was overwhelming.
“For the first time in my life, I felt I had achieved something I so dearly desired. I feel blessed that my hard work worked in my favour.”
Yet, even in success, he remains grounded. “This is not my limit. Life is long, and I will achieve much more.”
A Vision Beyond Self
Abhishek’s dream does not end with wearing the uniform. He aspires to grow intellectually, refine his personality, and become a high-performing officer in the Indian Army. If given the opportunity, he wishes to join the prestigious Gorkha Rifles and proudly march with the slogan “Vir Gorkha.”
More importantly, he wants to inspire the youth of Sikkim.
He recalls being surprised during his time outside the state when many people failed to recognize Sikkim. “When I said I’m from Sikkim, they looked at me awkwardly, like they didn’t know where it was.”
That experience strengthened his resolve to represent his state on a national platform and encourage young people to dream bigger — beyond geographical and mental boundaries.
A Message to the Youth
Abhishek Limboo’s message is powerful and clear:
“Human potential is limitless. You will know your limits only when you face challenges. And when you face challenges, you will realize that your limit is much higher than what you have set for yourself. So don’t be afraid to face challenges.”
He emphasizes awareness, discipline, consistency, willpower, and hard work as the pillars of success. According to him, the journey begins with awareness — knowing the opportunities available — but it is sustained by determination.
“Don’t be afraid. Don’t give up. Keep going.”
Pride of Sikkim
From the humble lanes of Dojak Sangmoo to securing AIR 17 and earning the rank of Lieutenant in the Indian Army, Abhishek Limboo’s journey is a story of grit, gratitude, and greatness.
His achievement is not only a personal victory but a historic milestone for Sikkim. It sends a powerful message — that even from the smallest villages, with limited means but limitless determination, one can rise to national prominence.
Today, Sikkim stands proud of its son — Lieutenant Abhishek Limboo — who has not only made history but has also become a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
