Lingee, December 26: Chief Minister PS Tamang on Thursday expressed serious concern over the declining number of students opting for Lepcha and Bhutia language studies at Sikkim Khangchendzonga University.
Addressing the gathering at the state-level Namsoong Festival held at Lingee, the Chief Minister noted that while enrolment in Lepcha and Bhutia language courses remains low, Limboo students are showing keen interest in pursuing higher studies in their mother tongue.

Terming the situation a matter of serious concern, CM Tamang emphasized the importance of preserving Sikkim’s indigenous languages and cultural identity. He stated that the government would soon hold consultations with leaders of different communities to address the issue.
The Chief Minister further informed that the state government is considering framing a policy under which students may be required to compulsorily pass their respective language subjects, as a measure to strengthen and safeguard native languages.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting linguistic diversity and ensuring the survival and growth of Sikkim’s traditional languages for future generations.
