Arithang-Chongrang Gram Panchayat Unit under Yuksam-Tashiding Constituency, Gyalshing District, organised a pilgrimage tour for senior citizens aged between 65 to 70 years on the occasion of world senior Citizens’ day.

The initiative was organised under the guidance and support of Minister-cum-Area MLA Mr Tshering T Bhutia, aimed to honour and value the elderly of the area while promoting intergenerational bonding. Over 50 senior citizens participated in the trip, which included visits to the holy site of Pathivara in Nepal and sightseeing at Kanyam, Semana, Pasupati, and Darjeeling.

The excursion was led by Panchayat President Ms Ganga Maya Chettri, accompanied by Zilla panchayat Member Mr Yadhu Nath Chettri, Panchayat Vice-President Ms Bina Hangma Limboo, panchayat Members Mr TB Limboo and Mr LB Basnett, RDA Mr Purna Chettri, along with GPU staff and Gram Planning Forum executives. Medical staff and ASHA workers accompanied the group to provide necessary healthcare support throughout the journey.

Highlighting the broader vision of the initiative, the GPU stated that the pilgrimage was not only intended as a spiritual experience but also as an effort to inspire younger generations to remain devoted to their parents and grandparents.

The GPU further noted that the inspiration behind the initiative stemmed from the Shravan Kumar Award, a flagship programme of the Government of Sikkim that recognises individuals who display exceptional service and dedication towards their parents.
