Organised by the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS) with Minister for Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, and Law & Parliamentary Affairs Departments, Mr Raju Basnet, as the Chief Guest, the event marks a significant step in strengthening badminton at the grassroots level across the state.

In his address, he congratulated BAS on behalf of the Education Department, emphasising that talent must be identified at the school level to build a strong sporting culture. He described this period as a golden era for sports in Sikkim under a sports-loving Chief Minister, urging players to make the most of the opportunity before declaring the championship open.

This year’s tournament drew participation from around 100 schools in the Under-17 and Under-19 categories during the district-level phase, with 36 schools qualifying for the State Finals in both team and individual events. The turnout reflects badminton’s growing popularity, supported by active district-level units.

The ceremony began with introductions of players and officials, followed by the National Anthem.
BAS Chief Coordinator, Mr David Gyamtso Lingdong, welcomed participants and outlined the event’s objectives, while the oath of fair play was led by Mr Hingmon Limboo of Namchi Public School.

Presenting the tournament report, BAS Vice President Mr Thendup Tseten Bhutia described the championship as the dream project of the Chief Minister and Chief Patron of BAS, noting that 667 players from 96 schools competed at the district level.

BAS President Mr Jacob Khaling reiterated the vision to scout and develop talent from every corner of Sikkim through proper coaching, aiming for achievements on national and international stages, including the Olympics.

A cultural performance added vibrancy to the occasion before the first matches commenced to enthusiastic applause.

The championship will conclude tomorrow, August 12, 2025 with the crowning of winners.
