Several students from Sikkim pursuing various courses at Asha Paramedical Institute, located in Salbari, Siliguri, have raised serious concerns regarding the validity of their degrees and alleged misrepresentation by the institute.
According to the aggrieved students, they were enrolled in different paramedical courses after paying hefty fees, with some claiming to have paid up to ₹2 lakh at the time of admission. The students alleged that they were later informed that the institute is registered as a vocational institute and not a recognized paramedical institute, thereby putting the validity of their certificates in question.
“Our certificates are now under doubt. We came to know later that the institute is not a paramedical institute but only a vocational one. With a vocational certificate, we will not get proper job placement,” said one of the students.
The students also alleged that the institute lacks adequate and updated infrastructure, which has been causing difficulties during practical training sessions.
Sources said that around 200 students are currently enrolled in various courses at the institute. However, the exact number of students from Sikkim is yet to be ascertained.
Following complaints lodged by the students and their parents, the police have arrested three individuals identified as Srijana Khatri, Kewal Khawas, and Kareena Rai in connection with the case. Meanwhile, the Director of the institute is reportedly absconding.
On February 8, the aggrieved students also staged a protest in front of the institute, demanding clarification, accountability, and justice.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
