The Sports & Youth Affairs Department (SYA), Government of Sikkim, on December 23, 2025, organised a reception programme at the Rangpo Tourism Guest House to felicitate the karatekas who brought laurels to the State by winning medals at the 69th School National Games 2025, held from December 15 to 19, 2025, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The reception was organised with the objective of promoting the significance and values of the School National Games among school children across Sikkim, while encouraging young athletes to pursue excellence in sports.

Ms. Muskan Tamang clinched a bronze medal in the 46 kg weight category (Under-14 Girls), marking the first medal for Sikkim at the National School Games in 2025 under the banner of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department.

The technical team comprised Sensei Puran Subba (Nodal Officer), Sensei Hem Kumari Rai (Team Coach), and Sensei Prosenjit Chakraborty (Team Manager), whose dedicated efforts played a vital role in the team’s performance.

The department had deputed a total of 14 karatekas and three officials to participate in the prestigious event. Earlier, SYA had also facilitated the participation of school athletes in the School National Games in Boxing, held in Arunachal Pradesh in November 2025.

After a considerable gap, the department successfully organised the first-ever State-Level School Games in November 2025, which served as a selection platform for athletes representing Sikkim at the School National Games. SYA further plans to send teams from additional sports disciplines to upcoming School National Games before the end of the financial year 2025.

The reception programme was attended by Mr. Jigmee Y. Lepcha, Joint Director (Coaching); Mr. Anoj Pradhan, Boxing Coach; Mr. Bijay Gurung, Taekwondo Coach; and Mr. R.B. Subba, Athletics Coach. Members of the Sikkim Karate Association, including Mr. Binam Gurung, Joint Secretary, also graced the occasion, along with the proud parents of the athletes.

The Sports & Youth Affairs Department reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young sporting talent and strengthening grassroots sports development in the State ( IPR)
