Under the directives of the Hon’ble High Court of Sikkim, a district-level team conducted its bi-monthly inspection of dams associated with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)in Gyalshing District on June 19, 2025.

The primary objective of the inspection was to assess the safety protocols and warning mechanisms in place at the hydro power project sites. This included a thorough review of warning signage, communication systems, and other safety installations.

Particular attention was paid to systems designed to alert the public to potential hazards. These included checks on power and communication lines, audible warning devices and beacons, illuminated signage, and public announcement systems intended to notify of sudden changes in water flow in the tailwater areas of the powerhouse.

The team also assessed the effectiveness of physical safety measures such as restraining devices, fencing, and barriers.

Furthermore, NHPC officials were instructed to undertake necessary repairs to the Reshi Highway Tunnel and adjoining safety walls.

The inspection concluded with several actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing public safety around the hydro power facilities. The proposed measures are expected to significantly strengthen the safety infrastructure in the inspected areas.
