Gangtok, August 12 (IPR): The Ecclesiastical Department conducted an awareness session on drug use and substance abuse at the Mini Hall, Manan Kendra, today.
The session was attended by the Secretary Ecclesiastical Department Ms Kincho Doma Lepcha, Senior Consultant De-addiction Centre Chiwataar Dr Satish Rasaily, Mr K C Bhutia, officers and officials of the department, and students.
Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is a government-led campaign to create awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free society. The initiative encourages community participation to reduce substance abuse and build healthier and safer communities.
In her welcome address, Secretary, Ms Kincho Doma Lepcha, emphasised the importance of raising awareness about the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and explained the rehabilitation facilities available. She highlighted the State Government’s collective efforts to curb drug abuse and expressed hope that the campaign would reach and positively influence society. She informed the gathering that the department had formed a Nasha Mukt Abhiyan committee to support the eradication of drug use and substance abuse. Ms Kincho Doma Lepcha hoped the session would be productive and provide participants with valuable insights.
Dr Satish Rasaily, in his address, spoke about the significance of addressing addiction and its prevalence in the state, noting the increasing demand for drugs. He stated that both urban and rural areas were affected and discussed various forms of addiction. He emphasised the importance of awareness programmes and said stigma remained a major barrier, urging society to work collectively to support those seeking help. He also shared real-life stories of addiction to illustrate its physical, psychological, and social consequences, and outlined available treatment options, rehabilitation services, and the crucial role of family and community support in recovery.
Mr KC Bhutia, in his address, detailed the consequences of substance overuse, drawing on his own experiences. He stressed the critical need to provide responsible, informed, and compassionate counselling to those struggling with addiction. Sharing his recovery journey, he stated that overcoming addiction was possible with determination and the right support. He further underlined the role of empathy, patience, and consistent community involvement in helping individuals towards a healthier, addiction-free life.
Thereafter, they took part in a pledge-taking ceremony.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Nodal Officer Nasha Mukt Abhiyan Mr Ngawang Chokkor.
