In a spirited demonstration of unity and environmental commitment, the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Dzongu, along with its seven Gram Panchayat Units, observed World Environment Day 2025 under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The day featured a range of impactful activities focused on raising awareness, encouraging community involvement, and promoting sustainable practices to safeguard the environment.

Plastic pollution remains one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time-damaging ecosystems, polluting water sources, and endangering biodiversity. Responding to this crisis, Dzongu’s observance was centred around a large-scale plantation drive, with avenue plantations carried out under the national campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, a heartfelt initiative envisioned by the Honourable Prime Minister of India and strongly championed by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). The campaign symbolically honours motherhood by nurturing nature and instills a sense of personal responsibility toward environmental conservation.

Fruit-bearing trees and flowering plants were planted along roads and open spaces enhancing the ecological richness and visual appeal of the region. Special emphasis was placed on cultivating the GI-tagged Dalley Khursani in the barren lands surrounding the BAC campus-an effort that blends ecological restoration with sustainable agricultural advancement.

Under the leadership of Hon’ble Minister and Area MLA, Shri Pintsho Namgyal Lepcha, Dzongu continues to champion inclusive and sustainable development. The World Environment Day observance served not just as a celebration, but as a collective commitment to eliminate plastic pollution and protect the planet-for today and for generations to come.
