An awareness programme on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day 2021 was held here at the auditorium of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College [NBBDC], Tadong on Tuesday. The programme, which is being organized by State Designated Agency, Sikkim, has the Chairman Sikkim State Electricity Regulatory Commission [SSERC], KB Kunwar as the chief and Secretary SSERC, Sherap Shenga was present as the guest of honour. The programme was attended by students and faculties of NBBDC, members of NGOs and officials from Power Department.

Power Department is notified as the State Designated Agency [SDA], Sikkim under Bureau of Energy Efficiency [BEE], Ministry of Power, Government of India. On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Week 2021, SDA has organised a series of awareness activities in association with Gangtok-based a rehabilitation and drug treatment centre, Serenity Home among students and general public in all four districts from 07 to 14 December to create a mass awareness on energy conservation.

Addressing the gathering, Chairman SSERC mentioned about the Energy Conservation Act 2001 and explained that the act was to the efficient use of the energy and for its conservation and also to save the environment. He urged for the wise use of the energy to conserve it for the future. He added that the Power Department has also introduced a pre-paid meter which would also help in saving energy. He urged students to pass the message of energy conservation to their respective groups and localities to create mass awareness.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Power Department Superintending Engineer-cum-Nodal Offer SDA, Pemba Lepcha mentioned that National Energy Conservation Day has been observed on 14 December every year since 1991 to create awareness among people to reduce energy consumption and conservation of energy. He mentioned that the Power Department was notified as SDA in 2009 and has been working in creating general awareness among masses on energy conservation measures through different initiatives. He urged everyone to work together to reduce energy consumption to save the future and to address issues of global warming and environmental issues.

Likewise, Serenity Home founder Uday C Rai expressed his gratitude to SDA for the opportunity to be part of the initiative in creating awareness on energy conservation and to help recovering members of the organization to come into the mainstream. He mentioned that quiz competitions through FM radio and other awareness activities were carried out at different parts of the State during National Energy Conservation Week 2021. He mentioned that the electric vehicle was also put on display at different parts of the state to promote the idea of electric vehicles for energy efficiency and to save the environment. He mentioned that events have received a good response from the people and healthy interactions were held during these programmes.

During the programme, a power point presentation on energy conservation was given by Junior Engineers Tek Maya Darjee and Nawang Choden of SDA. The chief guest has also released a comprehensive report on energy conservation activities by SDA, Sikkim.

On the occasion, students of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Tadong and members of Freedom Facility, Tathangchen have staged skits and presented songs on energy conservation. The programme has also witnessed other dances and songs by different groups.

The programme, which was conducted by Tshering Yangzum Bhutia and Aswaria Sharma of SDA, was concluded with the vote of thanks by Executive Engineer SDA, Sigratha Pradhan.
