Gangtok, May 31: The much-awaited Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at STNM is now operational since May 30th, after the due approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The initial go-ahead from earlier screening tests had already been given and the lab was awaiting the final confirmatory tests.

12 samples were collected and tested for validation on Friday, May 29th.

A total of 125 samples were tested on May 30th and all the results came out as negative. A total of 125 samples are being tested as of the 31st of May. It was informed to the media by Jacob Khaling SKM spokesperson cum Political Secretary to CM, that the numbers of the total samples would be increased to 200 per day in due course of time.

It is a major win for the state with the new VRDL now being fully functional in the state itself. The major benefit of having this lab is that instead of waiting for results for 2-3 days from outside the state and being denied due to backlogs and other unforeseen circumstances, tests can be conducted more easily and much faster.

“On this major feat, I would like to extend my thankfulness firstly to our Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri P.S.Golay for keeping the health of people of Sikkim as the utmost priority, Hon’ble Minister Health Shri M.K.Sharma for his full support and cooperation, Pr. Secretary Health, DG-cum-Secretary Health, M.S STNM Hospital, Dr Paras HOD of Microbiology Department, Mechanical Engineering Team, Alkem Pharmaceutical Company, ICMR and the Government of India. The state is also thoroughly indebted to the whole Medical team for their relentless service and dedication during the time of such a crisis,” said Khaling.
