Gangtok, November 23: Two Sikkimese footballers have been selected to attend a national camp for FIFA U-17 Women’s World cup 2020 to be held in India.
16-year-old Sridevi Subba, a class XI student and 15-year-old Laxmi Thatal, a class X student from Government Senior Secondary School, Dentam (West Sikkim) were picked after a trial held on November 13th, at Kalyani, West Bengal. The girls train under the Dentam Girls Academy, which was formed in 2016 with the goal of imparting football training to aspiring rural women footballers.
Subba is from Karmatar village in Dentam while Thatal is from Hee Gaon.
“We are happy with the selection and would strive to make our state proud by giving the best performance in the camp,” said the girls.
Speaking with Sikkim Chronicle over the phone, their coach, Aparna Lepcha informed that the girls would be attending the camp starting January 2nd, but that the venue for the camp is yet to be announced.
“There were nine girls from Sikkim who attended the trial, out of which two got selected. We are happy that the National team will have women footballers from Sikkim” said Lepcha. “The final players for the team will be selected after the national camp. We are hopeful that the girls would make it in the team”. She added that in total, 35 women footballers pan India have been selected for the camp.
On November 22nd, Kuber Bhandari, Secretary of the Sports Department met and interacted with the girls.
