The declaration of the dates for the highly anticipated by-polls in Sikkim have begun to create a stir in the community. People are discussing the imagined outcomes, wondering what the future awaits and deciding who they should vote for.
Since, the Sikkimese diaspora is scattered far and wide, a few days ago there was similar anticipation in New Delhi, where the students from Sikkim elected a new executive board for the Sikkim Student Association (SSA), Delhi.
The SSA, Delhi was formed in 1973 and has seen many students build it up to where it is now. Almost as old as the formation of Sikkim, the SSA, Delhi, has been of great help in looking after the welfare of Sikkimese students in the national capital. The familiarity of home in a city that is new and alien is important for young people who have just joined college.
The new President of the SSA is Rinchen Dolkar Nadikpa and the elected Vice President is Chewang Norbu Denzongpa, followed by Zuben Sherpa as General Secretary, Topden Tashi as Joint Secretary, Pem Uzeyla Bhutia as Cultural Secretary, Pema Chuked as the Treasurer and Sangay Tenzing Sherpa as Sports Secretary.
Each district in Delhi has their respective executives- Wangchuk Tseten Tonyot for North, Sagar Neopaney for South, Kalden Dorjee Wangyal for East and Navraj Gurung for West. Additionally, the hostel executive is Albert Gurung.
Along with the declaration of the new body, the SSA also organized a Fresher’s party at the New Sikkim House for students studying in Delhi-NCR. Gracing the occasion was the presence of Kapil Meena (IAS) Additional Financial Secretary, Government of Sikkim as the Chief Guest and Sunil Pradhan, Advisor to the SSA, Delhi and Professor at Jamia Millia Islamia.
The students had a talent round, where they showcased their skills and later, Ngawang Choden and Aabishkar Thatal were declared as Miss & Mister Fresher. Another memorable event that took place was the felicitation of Raman Mohora, President of St. Stephens College and Zigmee Gurung, Joint Secretary of Ramjas College by the SSA, Delhi.
