According to highly placed sources, Professor Silajit Guha, Head of Department, Mass Communication, Sikkim Central University has been removed in charges of molesting one of his students. It is informed that the four students from Department of Mass Communication have filed a complaint against Professor Guha accusing him of sexual harassment.
Professor Guha had faced similar allegations back in 2013. Assam University Executive council had requested the Chief Just of Assam High Court to initiate the judicial probe against Prof. Guha after he was found in “embarrasing position” with a student in one of the Department rooms.
Guha allegedly molested one of his students at a wedding held in Ranipool, which both were attending. It is also informed that after the plight was shared by the victim, the immense support was shown by the university students on Sikkim University Student’s Association (SUSA) Facebook Group which later encouraged the victim to file a complaint with the SUSA to the Internal Complaints Committee, Sikkim University.
After the initial complaint three more students came forward to report the same issue.
Following the complaint, Prof. Silajit Guha has been removed from the post of Head of the Department and an independent inquiry has been initiated. The office order dated May 13, 2019 reads ‘an inquiry on the basis of the complaint has already been initiated by the Internal Complaints Committee. On the recommendation of ICC to deliver fair justice and in order that the Head of the Department is not in a position to influence the inquiry in anyway. Prof. Silajit Guha is hereby removed from the Headship of the Department of Mass Communication with immediate effect’. The order is signed by T K Kaul, Sikkim University, Registrar.
Later, a followup order was issued which states “It is requested that Prof. Silajit Guha shall be immediately divested of the responsibilities of Supervision, Evaluation, Paper setting and other responsibilities as a member of faculty till inquiry is completed by ICC. He is debarred from Department of Mass Communication till inquiry by ICC is completed. He may during this period report in administrative block.”
It is also informed by the sources that no any police complaint has been lodged by the victims. Sikkim Chronicle is presently reaching out to Sikkim University Administration to delve into the case. This is a developing story.
