Gangtok, 23 November: The North East region has big potential to be the engine of accelerated growth for the entire country. With nature’s bounty and strategic locations, it has the scope to be one of the driving forces of economic growth and international convergence.
The need for the entire North East as an economic zone was pitched by entrepreneurs from Sikkim who had gathered at the Commerce and Industries Department today in the capital.
In a curtain-raiser program for the North East Food Show to be held in Shillong, Meghalaya from 4th to 6th December, the entrepreneurs have highlighted the need for collective growth between the North-Eastern states.
The North East Food Festival is a part of the initiation by Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma, in a collaborative venture between the state government of Meghalaya and the SAIL Group, the world’s largest food innovation network.
Dr HP Paul, Officer on Special Duty, Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship, Government of Meghalaya, was present in the program who highlighted on various commonalities shared by North Eastern states for a collective growth among India’s North East.
The 2019 edition would see the participation of over two hundred brands and a range of investors, agribusinesses, multinationals and entrepreneurs from many states of the country along with wide participation by many countries across the world.
Entrepreneur Rewaj Chettri while pitching for a North East economic zone stated that with the advent of projects like Asian Highway and many broad areas of convergence among various states, there is a capacity to make North East into an economic power hub. He further stated that in order to come together for a common market platform for various products of NE, this food festival can boost entrepreneurship and innovation in the entire region.
Thomas Chandy, Additional Chief Secretary while congratulating the organisers for the initiative, has urged entrepreneurs to take advantage of such programs. He also stressed on the need for the entire North East to learn and grow together.
Sikkim will also take part in the event which includes entrepreneurs and many government agencies.
