Sikkim joins fight against coronavirus bandwagon; screening at border areas

GANGTOK, February 01: As the world gears up to fight against the life-threatening novel coronavirus, Sikkim too, has joined the bandwagon. As a part of its preventive measure,  Sikkim has initiated the screening of vehicles and people at the border areas, entering the state from outside.

A high-level meeting headed by the state’s Chief Secretary was held on 28 January to discuss the same. 

As per the information received, the health department has set up isolation ward at the new STNM hospital and Urban Health Centre located at the old STNM hospital. Dedicatedambulances have also been assigned for emergency cases. 

The Director-General cum Secretary, Health Department, Government of Sikkim, Dr Pempa T. Bhutia, has informed that the state is in high alert and is prepared to tackle this disease.

“There is no need to panic, but it’s time to be serious and stay aware and alert”, told Dr Bhutia.

He has requested the public to be careful and stay alert. 

A total of 127 deaths by this viral disease have been recorded till 31 January 2020. Apart from China, 18 countries including Nepal and India, have reported cases of coronavirus. 

As informed by Dr Bhutia a total of 6,943 persons entering Sikkim have been screened at Rangpo, East Sikkim. Likewise,12 people at Uttarey, West Sikkim, 226 people at Reshi, East Sikkim and 67 people at Melli, South Sikkim, have been checked. These places are the border areas.

Out of 5 students from Sikkim, who are studying in China, 3 have returned and have been screened. No symptoms of coronavirus have been found in them.

The health department has requested not to pay heed to the information spread over the internet as many may be false. In case of any doubts, one may call 104, a 24 hours helpline and clear them.

It may be mentioned here that the novel coronavirus outbreak has been declared as ‘Global Emergency’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
