Sikkim: High court orders army to open blocked thoroughfare in Samdur


Gangtok, September 7: In a legal relief to the residents of Samdur, the High Court in an order dated 6th of August 2019 has ordered for the immediate opening of thoroughfares that were blocked by the army authorities in the intervening night of 4th September, till the further orders of the Court. 

This order now serves as a legal sanction to the use of thoroughfares by the common public.

As it happened, on 5th September, local residents of Samdur were shocked to find the walkway that connected the village with MP Golai fenced. 

Strong protests that ensued with people holding placards and raising slogans against the Military authorities, the army officials with the intervention from District Collector(East), reached a decision to open the thoroughfare. 

The court acknowledged the presence of the village prior to the establishment of Army cantonment. The order also mentioned about the inconvenience that the blockade has caused to the villagers.

The residents of the village have expressed gratitude to the High Court for the interim stay and have further hoped for an amicable solution which will cause minimum inconvenience to the villagers.
