Santosh Nirash: The first woman journalist of Sikkim.


Gangtok, March 8: Santosh Nirash (91 ) is one of the leading personalities in the state of Sikkim who has an immense and noteworthy contribution towards media and journalism in the state. She stepped into journalism in the year 1940 and took up journalism as her full-time career from 1959.

Her main forte in journalism was to explore and write stories and news on various social and developmental issues. She has gained her valuable experiences in journalism since the early days when Sikkim was a Kingdom and also after Sikkim became part of the Indian union. After the demise of her husband P.S. Nirash who was also the veteran journalist of Sikkim and Editor of Hindi Weekly Publication, ‘Jamana Sadabahar’, Santosh Nirash took up the editorship of ‘Jamana Sadabahar’.

Apart from being a journalist, she is also active in various social works and philanthropic activities. She is engaged in various social works, advocacy and awareness programme. She was also appointed as a goodwill ambassador of Sikkim State Aids Control Society in 2010.

During her one-year tenure, Nirash helped in promoting AIDS awareness across the State. She was also conferred with various award and accolades amongst which is Sikkim Sewa Samman (Journalism) in 2012 awarded by Government of Sikkim, Kanchenjunga Kalam Purushkar 2009 and Nirman Prakashan and Life time achievement award.
