Gangtok, Feburary A team of nine players will represent Sikkim in East India, North East India Senior Men and Women Power Lifting Championship, 2019 to be held at India Club, Silchar, Assam from February 22 to 24.
The team under the banner of ‘Power Lifting India (Sikkim)’ recently is affiliated with Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs.
The players will be competing under three categories – squat, bench press and dead lift.
In the championship Sikkim is representing as a team and not as an individual for the first time. There are six males and three females namely- Ranjeet Bhattarai, Yogesh Rai, Wanchen P. Bhutia, Phurba Tamang, Mitesh Pradhan, Bimla Pradhan, Anjali Timseena and Priya Subba.
Coach, Devendra Basnette informed that this is for the first time women from Sikkim are representing in the championship.
Explaning the motive behind launching the association, he said, “We formed this association to give different direction to this sport and focus more in National, Asian and World level championships. With the help of this sport our youth will get special preferences in railway, navy and army or central jobs”.
Power Lifting India (Sikkim) has Sushma Gurung as President, Sandeep D. Bhutia as Vice President, Reena Rai as Legal Advisor, Anu Pradhan as Treasurer, Devendra Basnette as General Secretary and Sanjeet Rai as Publicity Secretary.
“The association presently has 40 athletes and other aspirants can join the association too”, said General Secretary, Devendra Basnette.
The players are confident and ready to compete and being rigorously practising for past two months.
All the players will be competing in the senior category.
