Gangtok, March 1: Mayalmu Shelter Home is more than just a shelter home. It not only houses the people who have been discarded by the families but also injects a hope to live and love.

The shelter home located at Tadong ( Gangtok) in East Sikkim was started in 2008 by Passangkit Lepcha who later handed the charge to Late Bindhya Gurung. Gurung died in tragic road accident in 2016.

The house presently shelters 28 inmates, most of them are the ones who have been disowned by their families or relatives.

” Its a small world where love supersedes everything, I have been managing the hkme after the death of my daughter. I am living her dream” says, Deobir Gurung the present caretaker and also the father of Bindhya Gurung.

The home gets an annual support from the Social Welfare Department.

” We also have generous donors who contributes both in cash and kind. We have a dedicated managing staffs too who takes care of the inmates” he added.

The Doctors from the District hospital conducts regular medical camps and the psychiatrist CL Pradhan provides his service once in a month.

The house is presently operational in a rented apartment which limits the movement of the inmates due to space constrains.

” Some people celebrate birthday of their children in the house, some people goes teary eyed, some promises to come back and some spends quality time with the elderly people” said Gurung.
