Home boys against Kolkata giants: Who shall lift the Governor’s Gold Cup?


The two times champion and 7 times runner- up, Mohammedan(Md.) Sporting Club, Kolkata has once again reached the finals of the ongoing 39th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament being held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.

Md. Sporting, one of the most renowned football clubs of Kolkata, has reached the finals after beating Sikkim Police with a narrow goal difference of 1-0 in the semi-final match played on Sunday afternoon.

On the other hand, home team, Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club (SHSC) has reached the finals and will be facing the Kolkata giants. It is almost after more than four decades that any local team has reached the finals of this prestigious tournament organised by the Sikkim Football Association (SFA). The much-awaited final of the tournament will be held on Tuesday i.e. 12 November. The home boys secured their spot after beating Royal Football Club, Siliguri by a goal difference of 3-1 during the semi-finals.

It may be mentioned here that Md. Sporting Club, Kolkata had lifted the All India Governor’s Gold Cup in the year 1980 and 2016 and had been the runner-up team for 7 times.

The All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament is one of the prestigious football tournaments and is celebrated as a yearly football festival in Sikkim. The tournament basically held during the month of October and November.

The final day of the 39th edition of the Governor’s Gold Cup this time will also witness the Chief Minister, PS Tamang (Golay)leading his team, Chief Ministers XI in the exhibition match to be played against Chief Secretary XI, which will be held before the final match of the tournament. The CM will lead his team as a captain.
