Gangtok, August 5: The young members of Rotaract Club of Gangtok Hills celebrated friendship day on August 4 by organizing a musical program to raise funds for the Assam flood victims.
Around 25,000 collected through a drive.
The event was held at MG Marg in the capital Gangtok witnessing the singers, dancers, beatboxers and poets across state participating.
” We have named the event Sikkim for Assam, as we are all aware of the fact that how the state of Assam is reeling in a trouble with the flood situation. So many people have been killed including animals. What is the point of celebrating a friendship day if we don’t stand with our neighbouring state during difficult times” said the President of the Club, Deeden Bhutia.
The event was also supported by Rotary Club of Gangtok South and seven Interact clubs of Gangtok.
The volunteers were seen standing with a contribution boxes in the stretch of MG Marg so that the people could contribute for the flood victims.
” It feels so nice to see the young people involving in this kind of initiatives, the civil society needs to support and encourage them more. This is really a heart warming gesture to see on friendship day” said a senior citizen Asha Kharka.
The members of the club informed that the collected money would be sent to the counter part organization in Assam so that they can deposit it in the chief Minister Relief Fund.
The member of the club Homnat Chettri informed that the club also organizes several programs like setting up libraries in rural schools of Sikkim, blood donation drive and many more.
” The motto of our club is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders” he added.
