Gangtok June 27: A delegation of Football Players Association of Sikkim (FPAS) on Thursday afternoon called on Governor Ganga Prasad at New Raj Bhawan here.
The delegation had FPAS president Nirmal Chettri and executive members Sanju Pradhan, Robin Gurung, Bikash Jairu and Nim Tshering Lepcha. They presented khadas and a football duly autographed by them to the Governor.
Chettri, an Indian international and ISL footballer, briefed the Governor about the aims and objectives of FPAS which was formed last year. The FPAS is an association for the betterment and security of the footballers of Sikkim, he said. The association also aims to develop football talents in Sikkim at grassroots level, he added.
Chettri submitted to the Governor about the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) annual football awards being hosted by FPAS at Gangtok on July 21. The FPAI annual football awards function is an international-level programme and a prized event in the Indian football calendar, he said.
Chettri presented a letter from the FPAS seeking financial support and patronage from the Governor for the upcoming FPAI annual award function.
The Governor, in the short interaction, assured full encouragement and support from his side to the FPAS and the FPAI annual ward function taking place in Gangtok. He encouraged the FPAS to strive for the betterment and development of sports in Sikkim. He also spoke about the keen interest given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards development of sports in the country.
Nirmal Chettri, Sanju Pradhan and Bikash Jairu have represented the national team in many international matches and tournaments. They along with Robin Gurung are currently playing for their respective clubs in Indian Super League (ISL).
The FPAS delegation was accompanied by journalists Dichen Ongmu Bhutia and Bijoy Gurung.
