Draft electoral rolls published for municipal polls in East Sikkim
Gangtok, February 9: On Friday, the State Election Commission (SEC) published the draft electoral rolls for all the municipal areas in East Sikkim for the general public.
The DC East, Rahul K. informed that the SEC had announced on January 27, the schedule for preparation of electoral rolls for the forthcoming Municipal poll in Sikkim.
As per the 2020 state legislation, Municipal and Panchayat elections in Sikkim will be non-partisan meaning no political party can field their candidates. This time there will only be independent candidates in the fray and each will be given an election symbol from the pool of selected symbols by the SEC. The model of code of conducting for the contesting candidates will be finalized and released by the SEC.
The municipal elections in Sikkim are scheduled to take place in the first week of April, as announced by the Chief Minister recently.
The DC East informed that there are 19 wards and 53 polling stations in Gangtok Municipal Corporation, five wards and seven polling stations in Rangpo Nagar Panchayat and five wards and five polling stations in Singtam Nagar Panchayat. He requests the local people and voters to check the details in the draft electoral rolls published for their respective wards.
The printing and final publication of electoral rolls would take place by February 26. It was informed that the details of voter strength in each ward will also be finalised by then.
