A five day long, ‘Natya Utsav (theatre festival)’ will be held at Manan Kendra in Gangtok starting from December 15. The play will be presented by the artistes of Repertory Company of National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi.
‘Natya Utsav has been initiated by National School of Drama, Delhi in which Repertory Company artist showcases their plays in different parts of the country. This year the festival will be held in three locations of the northeast namely Gangtok, Agartala and Guwahati’ said Prof Suresh Sharma, the Director in charge of NSD while addressing a press conference in Gangtok on Saturday.
The festival shall kick start with the play ‘Khamoshi Sili Sili’ directed by Suresh Sharma. “The story is about Kashmiri Pandit family and deals with the displacement issues of communities,” said Sharma.
‘Taj Mahal ka Tender’ a satire play directed by Chittanranjan Tripathy will be staged on December 16.
Similarly, a play based on the story of Mahashweta Devi, ‘ Bayen’ directed by Usha Ganguly and ‘ Jaat Hi Poocho Sadhu Ki’ directed by Rajinder Nath will be performed on December 17 and 18 respectively.
The festival shall conclude with the play, ‘ Pehla Satyagrahi’ a play based on the struggle of Mahatma Gandhi directed by Suresh Sharma on December 19.
Similarly, the artistes of Sikkim Repertory company will be presenting a play’ Surajmukhi and Hamlet directed by theatre personality Bharti Sharma on December 23 and 24.
On December 26 & 27 the students of Sikkim Theatre Training Centre shall present a play ‘ Abhigyan Shakuntalam’ based on the story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala in Mahabharta.
