Februray 3, Namchi: Namchi, a south district town is turning to be a fascinating tourist spot and pilgrimage centre in short span with various tourism based infrastructural development in progress. The small town located at a distance of 78 kilometers from its state capital Gangtok and only 100 kilometers from Siliguri town has turned out to a must visit place in the lists of domestic and international tourists.
To facilitate more tourism opportunities and better mobility for movement of locals and tourists from Namchi town to the Samdruptse monastery, a well acclaimed development of the government, a new passenger ropeway is being opened up and is being officially inaugurated on February 4 by Chief Minister of Sikkim, Pawan Chamling.
Being a booming tourist hub, there is an ever growing need for the development of the region and one such milestone achieved in this direction is the construction of the second passenger ropeway in Namchi for the development of the Rock Garden as an important tourist spot.
“This is an unique initiative undertaken by the Chief Minister of Sikkim, for the development of tourism. He has also been very instrumental in creating the Char Dham – a huge pilgrimage cum cultural complex developed to promote religious, eco and village tourism in the state” reads an email sent to Sikkim Chronicle by the official concerned.
The inaugural function of the Namchi passenger ropeway is scheduled to take place on Monday, 4th February 2019 at 11am at the lower terminal point near PWD Guest House followed by subsequent functions at the Community Hall Namchi.
The Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling along with Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly K N Rai and Minister, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Government of Sikkim Ugyen Gyatso Bhutia will be present in the inaugural function as informed. The inaugural ceremony is also likely to be attended by high level delegates including Heads of Department, Government of Sikkim.
This 2.1 kilometers long passenger ropeway from PWD Guest House to the Rock Garden will be operational from 10am to 4pm. It will be traversing the natural beauty of the hills in that area. The first operational ropeway was from Rock Garden to the Samdruptse monastery and this new ropeway will act as a connect from PWD Guest House to the Rock Garden as well.
It is considered to be one of the longest ropeway made across a valley. “The construction however has been challenging due various technical difficulties faced due to tough terrains across the site. But it was successful owing to our expertise and talented team of experts and their constant guidance in this endeavour. For a ride amongst the hills and to feel the facade of the mountains, this will be a value
addition in the Sikkim tourism agenda. One can also get to view the Kangchenjunga range subject to proper weather conditions” also reads email.
The ropeway is made by the Damodar Ropeways & Infra Limited (DRIL)’s with mission is to create safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sound transport solutions through consistent quality and cost control in the making of ropeways in the country.
