Chalamthang: The budding rice bowl of Sikkim is geared up to become also the state’s first cleanest organic village writes NIRMAL MANGAR
Gangtok, March 30: Chalamthang, a small village in South Sikkim (under Temi Namphing constituency) is fast emerging as the cleanest village in Sikkim.
Located some 42 km far from the capital, Gangtok, a campaign to make the village committed in cleanliness has been taken up by Chalamthang Tourism Development Committee.
With the population close to 1071 people with 222 household Chalamthang is also popular in home stay operation.
Presently, there are 15 home stays which provides a unique rural experience to the visitors.

The village is committed to maintain its cleanliness standards by putting in place both preventive awareness and operational garbage dumping methods.

The ward panchayat, Renu Sharma said, ‘ There are fifteen self-help groups each of ten women members out of which twenty eight members are willing to do training on bamboo, wellness and spa. Apart from the state government schemes on tourism we are also being supported by North Eastern Rural Livelihood Project’
Sharma ‘ We will take up the campaign by going house to house educating villagers on cleanliness and segregation of waste and proper disposal. Effective implementation of plastic ban at village level, awareness at school level and also to visiting tourists. We have a technical expert who would help and guide us’
Amrit Sharma, a self-motivated youth and a home stay owner says, ‘Chalamthang would like to be a rural eco-tourism highlight and is on the path of being converted into cleanest organic village of Sikkim.
We hope that the UNESCO could look at the option of adopting the village for the implementation of the 17 sustainable development goals under UN charter’
